Street children in Nairobi have got a reprieve after the County government set aside Ksh. 40 million for their rehabilitation and reintegration.
The innovative gesture comes barely two weeks after Winnie Odinga, daughter of ODM leader Raila Odinga challenged the government to act swiftly on the re-emergence of children in the street.
Winnie pressed on the government to take quick action and implement sustainable solution to the menace.
Consequently, Nairobi government while announcing its plan to rescue the street children revealed that Ksh. 5 million will be used in the first phase of the project.
“Another Ksh. 3 million has been earmarked for family reunification and integration of the targeted 300 street children while Ksh. 2 million will be used to supervise child care facilities,” Nairobi County Executive Committee member (CEC) for Education Janet Ouko said.
The allocation, she said, is meant to promote the rights of children and provide protection by rescuing them from difficult circumstances.
“It will also improve the state of childcare facilities,” she added.
Ouko explained that the money will also help in running the four children homes including Makadara, Kayole, Shauri Moyo and Joseph Kang’ethe as well as completion of Ruai Rehabilitation center.
